Frenchman says the rest of the Continent have now caught up with the EPL.
Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger says that there being no English teams in the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since the 1995/96 season should serve as a massive “wake-up call” to the Premier League, reports BBC Sport Online.
The North Londoners were the last English team to exit Europe’s premier club competition on Wednesday night after being eliminated on the away goals rule against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The Gunners had trailed the Bavarians 3-1 from the first leg at the Emirates stadium three weeks ago, but were just unable to turn the tie on its head, in spite of winning 2-0 in the Allianz Arena.
And so Wenger and Co have now joined the likes of Premier League title holders Manchester City, the current European Cup winners Chelsea and the runaway top flight leaders Manchester United in departing the Champions League at the round of 16 stage.
“It’s a massive disappointment for English football,” said Wenger in his post-match press conference.
“We accept the rest of European football has caught us.”
