As expected, Aston Villa started with a high tempo and tried to put us under serious pressure, which paid such dividends for Borussia Dortmund in the week. But the Arsenal players did not crumble under it this time and managed to pass and play our way around it. Arsenal faced Borussia Dortmund after a good outing against Manchester City. A very weak Arsenal showed that the team is in need of desperate help defensively (our fellow writer Scott spoke about the defensive crisis ) and lost the game 2-0 against a very strong Dortmund team led by Ciro Immobile and Aubameyang. Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen is now just a signature away from completing his move from Arsenal to Barcelona, with the two clubs having reached a full agreement and the player now in the Catalan city. Vermaelen arrived at El Prat airport this morning, before being quickly whisked to Barcelona’s Ciudad Condal training complex, where he underwent his medical, ahead of formalising his deal. On Sunday, Vermaelen will officially sign his contract with Barcelona, ahead of being presented to the media. Barcelona are reportedly paying Arsenal a basic fee €15 million for the transfer of Vermaelen, which could rise to €19 million, based on meeting objectives such as winning the Champions League twice, whilst he’s with

Arsenal are clear to sign Portuguese defensive midfielder William Carvalho. The Gunners have been scouting Carvalho intensively in the last 18 months, and reports emerged last week that Arsene Wenger had made a £24million bid for his services. Now the Metro have revealed Carvalho has now been put up for sale by Sporting, with the club looking to cash in this summer. They know a fee of around £37 million is wanted, but they will be looking to do business for a fee off around £30 million.
