Arsene Wenger defends his transfer policy and of course pleads for time
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has defended his transfer policy and
insists spending big doesn’t necessarily mean adding quality to the
squad.
It has been another tumultuous summer at Arsenal, where the Gunners sold talismanic skipper Robin van Persie to Manchester United and Alex Song to Barcelona and in place reinforced the squad with the likes of Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla.
Wenger, who has always kept faith on his philosophy, insisted splashing big in the transfer market is not a true justification of quality, while buying better players than the present lot undermines the real meaning of the term.
“We have bought already – Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud,” he told The Daily Star.
“But when you listen to people, you always have to buy more.
“Spending in itself is not a quality. Buying better players than we have – that is a quality.
Ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Anfield to play Liverpool, Wenger asserted that new players need time to settle and he is counting on the return of Jack Wilshere from injury.
“We do spend when we find the right players. You have to give the players who have come in a bit of time.
“What is important is that we believe in the players we have and get our long-term injuries back, like Jack Wilshere.”
Both teams will be eager to register their first league win of the season. Arsenal holds a better record in this fixture of late as the Gunners haven’t lost at Anfield since 2008.
