Arsenal off to a great start in the NextGen series

Arsenal’s young guns have got off to a great start to their European campaign in the NextGen series. The Gunners faced off against Marseille in their first group game at the Underhill Stadium. Arsenal went on to win the match 3-0 in a very dominant display, specially in the first half.
Here is the starting line-up that Arsenal used in that match – Moore, Bellerin, Angha, Hajrovic, Monteiro, Yennaris, Olsson, Toral, Akpom, Gnabry, Ebecilio

Arsenal got off to a fantastic start as it took them only eight minutes to open the scoring. Akpom, after some wonderful work down the left, crossed into the box to which Yennaris applied the finishing touch. Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin had a wonderful match and was involved in most of the attacks in the match. Although the former Barcelona youngster remains susceptible defensively, his attacking play is something to behold.

In the 20th minute, Akpom, provider of the first goal, doubled the lead. Serge Knabry made a quick interception and found out Akpom with his pass, and the forward scored from a tap-in. Meanwhile Bellerin continued to bomb down the right, nutmegging the  defenders, putting in wonderful crosses into the box. In the 25th minute, Bellerin nearly got his reward, but his shot was blocked of the line.

Kris Olsson was impressive as well. Although he could over-play at times, his performance highlighted his wonderful technical ability and vision. If he incorporates a bit more directness into his play, he can be a real asset for the future. Olsson provided the assist for the third and final goal of the match as he set Akpom through on goal and the striker obliged with a clinical finish. It was a very comfortable victory in the end with Akpom and Bellerin shining for the Gunners. Yennaris put in a captain’s performance in the center of the field with his hardworking and tenacious display.

Arsenal are now in 2nd place of group 6, based on goal difference. Bilbao leads the table after only one game. Arsenal next match is on 25th October against Marseille, again, this time the Gunners will travel to Marcel Cerdan. The Gunners are favorites to top this group, which also contains Olympiacos. Top two from each of the six group will qualify for the knock-out stage along with 4 highest points-scoring third place finishers.
