Wenger surely will get M’Vila after this latest statement!
The media have hyped up Sahin’s ‘dream’ move to the Emirates, but do Arsenal actually need the Turkish international who has not been at the top of any Gooner’s shopping list until his proposed loan move away from Madrid became public?
Wenger certainly did not think so as the former Borussia Dortmund star completes his loan move to Liverpool, with the Frenchman highlighting that the Turk would not be an appropriate replacement short or long term for Song as he is a similar player to Wilshere. He is a deeper box-to-box midfielder that is not solely focused on defence and shielding the back four. Many Gunner fans have admitted their frustration with Liverpool beating us to his signature, but Le Professeur has some decent reasons not to pursue Sahin to the death.
The Daily Mail reported Wenger said this on Sahin:
He wouldn’t necessarily be a replacement for Song because Sahin isn’t a defensive midfielder.
I see Sahin as not a deep, deep midfielder, but a little bit higher.
We have Wilshere coming back quicker and he is a similar type of player.
The story starts to get more juicy with the Frenchman admitting that they are looking to add a solely defensive midfielder to the mix, however they have to be ‘top, top class’ and be available…umm M’Vila perhaps? Rennes are resigned to loosing their star man this summer, although rumours have cooled over his departure recently, the French side have stated that they will expect Wenger to make a move for the combative midfielder in the wake of Song’s departure.
Wenger said in his pre-match press conference:
If someone really top, top class comes up… I do not need to buy an average midfielder. If someone top, top class turns up, completely defensive, we will consider it.So there you have it, surely the Gunners will move for M’Vila. He ticks all the boxes including a moderate price tag for a 22-year-old defensive midfielder (believed to be around £15m) that has international experience, has publicly expressed his desire to play under Wenger, and can certainly be classed as a ‘top, top talent’.
If you look at the numbers you will see that Song was more of an offensive player than a defensive midfielder. Arteta can play deeper – the kind of Pirlo role – and we have Diaby who is a very strong defensive player.
Personally I’m not at all gutted about Sahin moving to Merseyside, as Madrid were not willing to include an option to buy next summer. Basically Arsenal would have paid his expensive wages, hindered the development of the likes of Coquelin who is itching for more playing time and worst of all he heads back to Madrid a better player. The Gunners are not a loaning club. The only benefit Arsenal would get is a player that would be able to fill the void of Wilshere until the Englishman is fit in October – and for what price? About £6.2m in wages (he’s believed to be on £120k a week) for a player that will leave again next summer, why not spend this money on M’Vila and gain a permanent solution for a straight up defensive midfielder? Well hopefully Wenger will.
What are your thoughts? Are you still feeling frustrated by Wenger forgoing the opportunity to sign Sahin even if it was strictly for a years loan? Are you excited by the possibility of Wenger diving into the market for a defensive midfielder?
